DESCRIPTION:
The Glorious Guilds of Buttonville is a game I got to play early in development and it immediately clicked for me. Part of that was it’s ease of play, but what really appealed to me was the robust cast of characters and open ended theme. I had been wanting to work with illustrator Matt Owen for years and this game was the blank slate that I knew would be perfect to pair with his brilliant imagination and unique style.

Since the game didn’t really have much in the way of story opportunity, the worldbuilding had to be more implied in the characters’ appearance and their respective backgrounds. Matt and I worked together to make sure each of our Guildmembers looked singular and gave players lots of fun details for players to discover.
Inspiration for the Guildmembers came from a lot of places. Family shows from when I was a kid like Amazing Stories, movies like Legend, and oddball children’s stories like Stormy with a Chance of Meatballs all play a part in my goal of creating characters that will be memorable long after you stop playing.
Some examples of the art direction I passed to Matt before he did his magic.
